If you’re anything like us at Outdoor Sweden you love going hiking. And usually, hiking means getting out into the mountains, climbing uphill, and coming out to a beautiful view. Right?
Well, if you’re visiting Stockholm, perhaps you’re wondering whether there are any mountains near Stockholm.
Unlike its neighbour to the west, Norway, Sweden doesn’t have a huge number of what you’d typically call mountains in the south. What mountains there are are really more like big hills. Most of the Swedish mountains, the Scandinavian Mountains, are found towards the north, especially along the border of Norway and Sweden.
The first time I set out to explore the ‘mountains’ near Stockholm, I found myself on an easy hike through a beautifully forested area, leading to a small hilltop. Standing there, the view of the city below, was much prettier than I’d given these hilltop walks in Stockholm credit for. That moment taught me that even the smaller elevations here have their own beauty. Plus, no mountains makes the city great for easy bike rides if you want to find somewhere for Stockholm bike rentals.
Fun fact: In Swedish, a mountain sitting below the tree line is called a berg. If the summit is above the treeline it’s a fjäll!
However, that doesn’t mean you should forget visiting Stockholm. There are plenty of hikes and walks in Stockholm where you can still find elevation and come out to a beautiful view.

Though you could say there are over 200 named mountains in Stockholm County, spread across the Stockholm archipelago as well as the mainland, in reality, there are very few that could be deemed mountains.
Below, I’ve plotted the highest 8 mountains of Stockholm on the map so you can get an idea as to where they are.
Despite being low in altitude, they still offer some impressive views!

Hammarbybacken
Okay, so this isn’t a natural mountain and some might therefore turn their noses up at it, but it’s a high viewpoint and one of the best places for skiing in Stockholm too.
Last winter, I visited Hammarbybacken for a quick ski trip. Despite its artificial origins (built with rubble from construction projects), the slopes offered a surprisingly authentic skiing experience. The view from the top was an added bonus.
At 87m high, this is the shortest of my top 8, but it’s easily accessible and offers some fun activities at the top which I think makes it worth it. You’ll find a climbing park, a fun mountain coaster, and the mountain tube too. Every November/December, those who are super fit can even take part in the Hammarby Alpin Marathon; an event where you go up and down the hill for 45 km! A shorter, 25 km distance is also available.
Plus, you get some pretty cool views out towards Gamla Stan and the archipelago.
Skinnarviksberget
At 53 m this hill in central Stockholm didn’t quite make the list of the highest Stockholm mountains above, but it’s a popular place and so well worth a mention here.
This is the main hill in downtown Stockholm and from the top, you’ll overlook the entire city center. It’s definitely one of the best views in Stockholm!
It’s a great place for meeting friends and enjoying picnics or some drink; especially for sunset in the summer!
Tornberget
As the highest mountain in Stockholm, this easy-to-hike hill in the middle of the Södertörn Peninsula is found within Tornberget Nature Reserve.
There are loads of trails within this Stockholm nature reserve and you can hike one to the top of Tornberget. At the top, you’ll find an observation tower for some great views (and a few extra metres of height onto this mountain near Stockholm!).
Väsjöbacken
This mountain is just to the north of Stockholm and is well known in the area as it’s a good option for skiing near the city. In the summer you’ll also find some mountain biking trails here.
The closest big mountains near Stockholm
You’ll find some bigger mountains near Stockholm if you make your way over to Dalarna.
Though not exactly near Stockholm, my journey to Storvätteshågna in Dalarna was so much fun. The hike was challenging but rewarding, with each step improving on the views of the surrounding landscape.
Dalarna County is about 400 km away so it’s possible to visit over a long weekend from the city. Which honestly, is such a nice escape and you’ll be surrounded by beautiful nature, lakes and plenty of opportunities for adventure!
The main town in this area is Sälen which has become popular for skiing over winter. In fact, Sälen is one of the best ski resorts in Sweden! And, come summer, you can scale the highest peak in Dalarna, Storvätteshågna which sits at 1 204 m tall.
