Stockholm Outdoors Guide

Stockholm is the capital of Sweden and is a must-visit destination for outdoor enthusiasts travelling to Scandinavia.

Known as “beauty on water,” this city is spread across 14 islands and is super pretty with stunning architecture and the natural beauty of the Baltic Sea and Lake Mälaren.

Despite being the biggest city in Sweden, Stockholm maintains a cosy, small-town ambience.

The city’s unique geography makes it an ideal place for water-based activities. You can explore the numerous bridges and passenger boats connecting the islands, providing a scenic view of the city’s waterways.

The Stockholm islands, valued since the Stone Age, offer a mix of urban development and green spaces and nature lovers will find plenty to enjoy, from leafy parks and serene walking trails to excellent swimming spots. Waterside bars and restaurants are perfect for relaxing and observing the local scene too.

Walking in Stockholm is the best way to explore the city’s medieval architecture and modern design. If time allows, venture east to the mesmerizing Stockholm Archipelago, a vast expanse of around 30,000 islands, perfect for day trips and exploring the untouched natural beauty.

Whether you go hiking in Stockholm, hit the water by exploring the Stockholm archipelago by kayak, or want to experience the city by bike, there are so many ways to experience this city through outdoor adventure.

Best time of year to visit Stockholm

Our favourite time to visit Stockholm is late spring – early summer (May- June). The trees are in leaf, the flowers are out, you can enjoy sitting on terraces and patios with a drink by the water, and it’s prime time for visiting the Stockholm archipelago.

If you love skiing, then we recommend January for skiing near Stockholm too.
