Life by the water
Stockholm’s unique geography means it’s set across 14 islands. Therefore you won’t have to go far to take a relaxing walk alongside the water or to enjoy a drink or a korv (hot dog) by the waterside.
The city’s waterways provide not just a picturesque backdrop but a playground for kayakers, paddle boarders, and leisurely boat tours.
One of our favourite modes of public transport in Stockholm are the ferries connecting the islands and you’ve also got the beautiful Stockholm archipelago which is perfect for kayaking near Stockholm and day trips from the city.
The water is also great for taking a dip, whether in summer or winter, and you can find some beautiful beach areas near Stockholm too.
Ideal for foodies
Swedish cuisine isn’t as heavy as you might think at first. There’s actually a real focus on fresh, local ingredients. Stockholm is undoubtedly one of the best places to experience Swedish cuisine. You can enjoy meatballs, fish, and so much more. Whatever cuisine you’re in the mood for, you’ll be able to find it in Stockholm.
Food markets like Östermalms Saluhall offer a taste of local food, with a heavy focus on fish, while the city’s numerous cafés provide the perfect fika (coffee break) experience. My favourite is definitely a cardamon bun!

History and art
Stockholm is ideal if you’re a culture buff and want to explore museums and galleries; there are so many to choose from.
The famous Vasa Museum showcases the impressive maritime heritage of Sweden. Art enthusiasts will find their haven in the Moderna Museet, home to a stunning collection of contemporary art. And, if you’re a music lover or fan of Eurovision then you’ll have to head to the ABBA museum!
Plus, you can’t visit Stockholm without wandering around Gama Stan (Old Town) and its beautiful cobblestoned streets. Get lost in its side streets, find cute cafes for coffee and be sure to check out Stortorget; the oldest square in the city with the beautiful coloured houses.
Stockholm is so green
Dubbed as one of the world’s most sustainable cities, Stockholm demonstrates Sweden’s commitment to environmental preservation.
The city’s parks, like Djurgården and Hagaparken, offer green sanctuaries amongst the city, making it a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts.
You’ll find tree-lined streets, views of the water all over and plenty of flower shops to browse and visit.
Festivals and Events
Stockholm’s calendar is full of cultural festivals and events where you can experience Swedish traditions and culture.
The Stockholm Film Festival in autumn celebrates international and Swedish cinema, providing a platform for indie films and up-and-coming filmmakers.
During the summer, the city comes alive with Stockholm Pride, one of Europe’s largest pride festivals, celebrating love, diversity, and equality. The most famous summer celebration, however, is probably the Midsummer celebration. This festival is deeply rooted in Swedish tradition and a time when locals and visitors alike dance around the maypole, enjoy traditional foods, and revel in the beauty of the longest day of the year. It’s these festivals that make June one of the best times to visit Stockholm.
You’ll also find music festivals like the Rosendal Garden Party taking place in Stockholm’s Djurgården, Jazz at Skansen and other summer festivals including a street food festival.
Stockholm in winter is still beautiful
The winter months often see Stockholm dusted with snow which turns the rooftops white. The lakes freeze and the streets are lit up with twinkling lights.
It’s a season of magic which only gets better with the Christmas markets that come to town. The Christmas markets, especially the ones in Gamla Stan and Skansen, offer a festive atmosphere where you can sip on warm glögg (mulled wine), taste seasonal treats, and shop for gifts.
The city’s museums and cafés become havens of warmth and culture. And the winter is 100% the perfect time for enjoying a bastu (sauna) too. There are lots of saunas throughout Stockholm so the hardest part is choosing which one to visit!
Plus, in winter you can enjoy skiing both in the city at places like Flottsbro and Hammarbybacken, or nearby at ski hills in Sweden like Romme Alpin.
Swedish design
