While Stockholm may not be the first name that comes to mind for skiing and snowboarding in Sweden, the city and its surroundings surprisingly offer a delightful mix of real and artificial slopes for when the natural snow depth isn’t quite there, perfect for a quick ski getaway. 

You can enjoy both downhill skiing and cross-country skiing in Stockholm and there are plenty of family-friendly resorts where your kids can learn how to ski too. 

Some of these places for skiing near Stockholm County are just a short half-hour journey from the city which means you don’t have to spend hours travelling to enjoy the slopes. There are also some bigger resorts a bit further afield if you’ve got a weekend to spare and are keen to ski Stockholm. 

In this guide, we’ll introduce you to the best ski areas near Stockholm, where the vibe is laid-back and the slopes, though not super long, are well-managed and great fun.

Hammarbybacken Ski Resort

• Distance from Stockholm: 10 minutes drive
• How to get there: By Bus: Take bus #74 to Hammarbybacken, alighting at the Sickla Quay stop, followed by a short 5 to 10-minute walk. By Metro: Take the Green line to Gullmarsplan, switch to “Tvärbanan”, get off at Sickla Quay, and then walk for 5 to 10 minutes.

When the snow comes to Stockholm, skiing lovers in the city don’t have to go far since there are places to ski right in the city.

Hammarbybacken is one of the best places for skiing in Stockholm that you need to check out at least once. Here, you can glide down the slopes all while enjoying an amazing view of Stockholm itself. 

There’s a snowpark and 4 runs for skiing at Hammarbybacken which is a manmade hill. There are T-bar lifts and conveyor belts which take you to the top of the manmade hill and ski classes are available for beginners. You can also rent your skiing gear onsite too.

Romme Alpin Sweden

• Distance from Stockholm: 2.5 hours away from Stockholm
• How to get there: By Ski Bus: Seasonal ski buses run from City Terminal in Stockholm, taking about two and a half hours. By Train: Take a train to Borlänge (approximately two hours), then use local transport to reach Romme Alpin.

Romme Alpin ski resort is in the Dalarna region in Central Sweden and is one of the best places for a skiing holiday from Stockholm.

Not only is the area of Dalarna absolutely beautiful all year round, but this ski resort offers great skiing. The longest ski run is almost 3 km long so you’ll really get your money’s worth for your lift ticket. 

In total, there are 34 groomed ski slopes here and they’re spread across all levels so whether you’re a beginner or a more experienced skier you’ll have fun. One of the most challenging runs is Gotes Brant.

The only downside to Romme Alpin is that it can get pretty busy during weekends! But that’s to be expected as it offers some of the best skiing in Sweden near Stockholm as you’ll see when you visit.

Väsjöbacken in Sollentuna

• Distance from Stockholm: 20 km, 20 minutes
• How to get there: Enter directions to “Väsjöbacken” or “Frestavägen 86, Sollentuna”. Free parking is available on-site but watch for residential areas’ parking restrictions.

Right beside Lake Väsjön in Sollentuna, Väsjöbacken is a great family-friendly skiing destination, just a stone’s throw away from Stockholm. 

Just a couple of miles north of the centre of Stockholm Väsjöbacken is very easy to get to.

Here you’ll find 5 ski runs and a terrain pack, so there’s plenty to keep you entertained for a day. Whether you’re looking to practice your tricks or glide down the slopes this ski resort near Stockholm has you covered.

If you live in the city and want to learn how to ski, then this is a great place to go since it’s so closeby. Plus, they have really flexible ski pass options and you can pay for anything lasting from 1 hour to the whole day.

The resort, as with many ski resorts in Sweden, is designed with families in mind, offering a comfortable and enjoyable experience for visitors of all ages. It’s an ideal spot for a family day out or a weekend ski trip. Onsite there are toilets, a cafe, and spaces to sit and enjoy food you may have brought with you. 

Ekholmsnäsbacken

• Distance from Stockholm: 25 minutes, 12 km
• How to get there: By Car: Driving is the most straightforward option, with the ski area located on Lidingö island. By Public Transport: Take the red subway line to Ropsten, switch to a #201 bus bound for Båtsmansvägen, and then walk about 1.2km east to reach Ekholmsnäsbacken.

Ekholmsnäsbacken is another great ski resort near Stockholm. Ideal for skiing in Sweden for beginners and families, the gentle slopes offer a safe and encouraging environment for those just getting started on skis or snowboards. 

You can get to Ekholmsnäbacken in under 30 minutes from Stockholm and it’s pretty affordable too, with a half-day pass costing less than 300 SEK.

Onsite, you’ll find a ski shop for your gear needs and a simple snack shop to refuel after your skiing adventures.

Uppsala Alpine Centre

• Distance from Stockholm: 1 hour from Stockholm, 66 km
• How to get there: Trains and buses are available to take you to the Alpin Center.

In the city of Uppsala just north of Stockholm, this alpine area in Sunnerstabacken has just two different ski areas – Gropbacken for sledding and Åsidan for downhill skiing and snowboarding.

Sunnerstabacken has slalom and snowboard runs and there are 3 slopes – with difficulty levels of green, blue, and red. There is also a smaller freestyle park. 

It’s lit up overnight so you can go after work or school too and in the dark evenings which characterize Stockholm’s winter season.

Vedbobacken

• Distance from Stockholm: 115 km, 1 hour 15 minutes
• How to get there: Trains and buses are available to get to Vedbobacken.

Vedbobacken in Västmanland is a small and friendly ski slope with a fun park, suitable for families with smaller children who want to do some technical training for a day. 

Though small, there are 5 short runs varying in difficulty from green to red, and 3 lifts.

At the bottom of the slope, you’ll find somewhere to buy lift tickets, ski rental, a cafe, and a barbecue area with firewood so you can warm up in between laps.

There’s also an artificial snow track of just over 2 km for cross country skiing and a toboggan run which little kids (and big ones) love.

Ekebyhovsbacken

• Distance from Stockholm: 30 minutes by car, 21 km
• How to get there: By Car: Ekebyhovsbacken is easily accessible by car from Stockholm. By Bus: Without a car, you can take bus #176/177 from Solna station to Centrumslingan, followed by a 20-minute walk along Bryggavägen to the east to reach the slopes.

Ekebyhovsbacken is on the picturesque island of Ekerö west of Stockholm and is one of the best places for skiing near Stockholm Sweden. 

This resort is particularly welcoming to families, with a dedicated ski school for kids. It also caters to all skill levels, offering separate lifts for beginners and more advanced skiers and snowboarders. 

The hill also stays open at night with 4 slopes being floodlit which means you can keep skiing even when the sun goes down.

Kungsberget

• Distance from Stockholm: 215 km, 2 hours
• How to get there: By Car: Driving is a straightforward option.
• By Ski Bus: Alternatively, take the ski bus which conveniently includes a lift pass in the fare.

Kungsberget is loved by skiers from Stockholm looking for one of the largest ski resorts to check out yet still not go far from the city.

At Kungsberget you’ll find 25 pistes and 15 lifts so there’s loads of variety. With a mix of slope difficulty and even a Nintendo Land, this Stockholm ski hill is a hit with both younger and more experienced skiers. 

You can also make this into a great weekend ski holiday as there’s accommodation right on site. The rooms are right on the slope so you can ski in and out of your room!

Ragnhildsborgsbacken

• Distance from Stockholm: 35 minutes, 37 km
• How to get there: You can drive from Stockholm or take a train to Östertälje, followed by bus #761 to Ragnhildsborgsvägen, and then a 15-minute walk.

Ragnhildsborgsbacken is about an hour’s drive away from Stockholm to the southwest. It’s a small, volunteer-run ski slope and specializes in offering skiing to children and families. Children under 7 get free lift access too which makes it even better. Adults are of course welcome too!

The ski school here is renowned for its excellent teaching, providing a supportive and fun environment for kids to learn and hone their skiing skills.

Ragnhildsborgsbacken is also quite affordable and you can buy either a full-day pass or a half-day pass.  

While the slope may be smaller compared to larger resorts, the cozy setting is perfect for beginners and those who prefer a more peaceful skiing experience.

The resort also provides ski equipment for hire, though it’s advisable to book in advance or bring your own gear to ensure availability.

Flottsbro

• Distance from Stockholm: 25 km, 30 minutes
• How to get there: Take a pendeltåg (commuter train) from Stockholm’s Central Station to Huddinge Centrum, followed by a 25-minute bus ride on bus #714 to Flottsbro.

Flottsbro is the highest ski area in the greater Stockholm region and offers 5 ski runs as well as a 700m long cross country ski track. It’s the highest ‘mountain’ for you to ski near Stockholm.

At the Flottsbro ski resort, you’ll also find a restaurant, a sledding area, and a ski park. You can rent ski equipment on-site if you need to. It’s a good idea to book in advance so that your gear is ready when you arrive and you can hit the slopes straight away. 

You’re required to pre-book your ski lift ticket in advance as there is a limited number of skiers allowed on the slope at any one time. Still, it’s a great option for skiing close to Stockholm.

Cross Country Skiing near Stockholm

When is the best time for skiing in Stockholm?

The best time to ski in Stockholm in Sweden, and the best time to ski in Sweden in general, typically from late December to early April. This period offers the most reliable snow conditions, with January and February being the peak months for skiing Stockholm. 

During these months, the temperatures are usually cold enough to maintain good snow quality, and the days, although short, are often bright and clear. 

It’s worth noting that the Christmas and New Year holidays, as well as the February school break, are popular times for skiing, so the slopes can be busier. If you like quieter slopes, mid-January to early February or late March can be best. 

Additionally, many ski resorts around Stockholm make artificial snow, which helps extend the skiing season and ensures decent skiing conditions even in milder winters. Unlike skiing in Gothenburg though, there is no indoor skiing in Stockholm.
