When is the best time of year to visit Stockholm?

Stockholm is the capital of Sweden and is often called the capital of Scandinavia too. It’s a great place for people who love the outdoors which is one of the reasons we chose it as where we want to live.

The city of Stockholm itself is set across 14 of Sweden’s islands and there are parks and nature reserves everywhere.

If you’re an outdoor lover looking for outdoor things to do in Stockholm, then perhaps you’re wondering when the best time of year to visit is.

Given that Stockholm is in northern Europe, it gets fairly cold and dark winters with long summer days. While it’s not a place you’re guaranteed to get a beautiful summer, when the sun does come out you’re in for a treat.

Our favourite time to recommend visiting Stockholm is in May and June. During this time the plants and flowers are in bloom and you have the chance to explore Sweden during one of its holidays. Midsommer in June is definitely a popular time to visit. While the locals typically head to their stugor (cottages), there are several events in Stockholm which allow you the chance to join in the festivities.

However, winter in Stockholm also has plenty to offer if you’re a winter sports lover which is one of the reasons we think Stockholm is worth visiting in winter too.

Below we’ve broken down the best times to visit Stockholm for those who love to embrace the great outdoors, highlighting key activities and what you can expect from the weather and crowds.

Spring in Stockholm (April – June)

  • Average Temperatures: 5°C (41°F) in April to 16°C (61°F) in June
  • Crowds: Moderate. Spring sees a gradual increase in tourists, but it’s before the peak summer rush.

When spring rolls around from April to June, Stockholm starts to wake up.

Just as how flowers pop up everywhere, so do Stockholmers coming out of winter hibernation. The city gets warmer and sunnier by the day and this is your go-to time for bike rides in the green spots of the city or watching cherry blossoms paint the town pink.

The air is fresh, not too hot, not too cold, just perfect for being outside.

And guess what? There aren’t too many people around yet, so you get to enjoy more space for yourself.

It’s the perfect time for:

  • Cherry Blossom Viewing in Kungsträdgården: Usually in late April, the cherry blossoms bloom, creating a pink wonderland.
  • Biking Around Djurgården: With mild temperatures and fewer crowds, exploring the green island of Djurgården by bike is a joy.
  • Outdoor Cafés: Enjoy the emerging sunshine at one of the city’s many outdoor cafés starting to open up.

And with fewer people visiting Stockholm at this time of year, you get to see a more intimate side of the city. It’s peaceful, quiet, and absolutely beautiful, like stepping into a holiday card.
